Climbing & Abseiling in Kielder

Reaching New Heights, Ready for Everyone
Calvert Kielder

Climbing & Abseiling

Nestled in Northumberland’s Kielder Forest, Calvert Kielder’s purpose-built climbing wall and abseiling tower offer a genuinely supportive introduction to both activities. Led by highly trained and experienced instructors, they are designed to be accessible to everyone. Whether you’re inching up the ramped ‘Rocky Tour’ on the climbing wall or hanging out over the edge of the 10-metre tower with the forest beneath you ready to abseil down, the goal is the same: to take on the challenge and surprise yourself.

You don’t need to have done it before. You don’t need to class yourself as particularly brave. You just need to be willing to give it a go.

Climbing

£17.50 per person | 2 climbs | Tuesday and Sunday, 9.30am and 12pm

There is only one climbing wall like this in the world.

Calvert Kielder’s custom-built 8-metre indoor climbing wall was co-designed with people with disabilities and purpose-built from the ground up to be inclusive for all. With around 30 routes, our climbing wall caters for different types and levels of ability. So whether you’re a complete beginner or looking for a bit of a challenge, there’s a line on the wall with your name on it.

After a safety briefing and meeting your instructor, sessions can cover a number of different climbing areas. Scramble up the ramped Rocky Tour. Work your way through a selection of vertical climbs. Or, for those who want to push themselves further, there are two routes with an overhang at the top. An additional rope pulley system on one wall means that the trickier sections are never out of reach.

Your instructor is with you throughout, offering exactly the level of support you need. And when you reach the top? Ring the bell.

Abseiling

£20 per person | 2 abseils | 12pm Tuesdays

One of Calvert Kielder’s original activities and as popular now as it’s ever been.

After a full safety briefing, you’ll ascend the 10-metre tower — and then comes the moment that never quite gets easier to describe: leaning out over the edge, looking out across Kielder Forest and beginning your descent down the side of the tower to the ground below.

It’s you in control of your speed, your pace, your descent. Your instructor is on a safety line above throughout, providing exactly the amount of support you need. But the feeling of making your way down under your own steam is entirely yours.

The abseiling tower is also adapted for wheelchair abseiling, making it accessible to guests with limited mobility. The activity will take place in a manual chair which can be provided if required. Speak to our team in advance and we’ll make sure everything is in place for your visit.

Accessibility

Our climbing and abseiling activities were designed in collaboration with people with disabilities. Not retrofitted but built with inclusion at the centre from the start.

We carry one of the widest ranges of adaptive outdoor activity equipment in the UK, including specialist harnesses, pulley systems and more. Our staff are specially trained and highly experienced in supporting people of all abilities, so you can focus on the activity itself.

The wall has around 30 different routes for different types and levels of ability. The abseiling tower is accessible to wheelchair users via a pulley system. And both activities are led by instructors who’ll give you exactly the support you need to get to the top or over the edge.

Whatever you thought you were capable of, we’d encourage you to think again and give these activities a try.
