Planning Your Visit

A little planning goes a long way when planning a holiday, day out or group retreat. Let’s get you up and running with all the information you need to know to make your trip to Calvert Kielder here in Northumberland a success.

Getting Here

Calvert Kielder, Kielder Forest, Hexham, NE48 1BS

Calvert Kielder sits within Kielder Water & Forest Park in Northumberland, close to the Scottish border and about an hour’s drive north of Hexham.

The journey in is part of the experience. The roads narrow, the trees close in, and the world you left behind starts to feel a long way away. Give yourself time to enjoy it.

Please park in the signposted Reception Car Park when checking in. There’s also dedicated parking outside each lodge and the outdoor activities hub.

Before You Arrive

If you’re booking a lodge stay, a day of outdoor activities or group retreat, our team will be in touch ahead of your visit to make sure everything’s set up the way you need it.

If you’re joining us for a respite care break, our care team will send you a care plan to complete before your visit. This is your chance to tell us exactly how you’d like your care delivered, what you’re looking forward to, and anything we should know before you arrive.

Either way, don’t hesitate to get in touch in advance. We’re here to help with any questions, and we welcome pre-stay visits for anyone who’d like to see the site before booking.

What to Pack

The weather in the forest can be unpredictable. Layers and insect repellent are recommended. Mobile reception is patchy in Kielder Forest, so we recommend using our super-fast WiFi to make calls.

Beyond that, pack for what you’re planning. Walking boots for exploring the forest trails. Light, breathable clothing for outdoor activities. Swimming things for the pool. Closed toe shoes for archery and axe throwing! We’ll supply all other activity-specific kit you might need.

Everything else — linen, towels, and kitchen equipment — is provided in your accommodation. If you have any specific equipment needs for your stay, let us know at the time of booking so we can make sure it’s ready for you.

Checking In

Check-in is currently from 5pm on your day of arrival at our main reception, which is signposted on site. Our team will be on hand to welcome you, show you to your lodge, and make sure you have everything you need to get settled.

If you’re arriving later in the day or have any specific timing requirements, just let us know in advance and we’ll make it work for you.

Shopping & Groceries

As Kielder is wonderfully remote, many guests find it easiest to have groceries delivered directly to their lodge. Both ASDA and Tesco deliver to the site — please use postcode NE48 1BS and ensure your booking name is on the delivery. If you booked via a third party, please confirm your lodge number and booking name with us directly.

The small Kielder General Store is 10 minutes’ drive away for anything you might have forgotten.

Making the Most of Your Stay

A wide variety of outdoor activities run at Calvert Kielder throughout the week. Once your lodge booking is confirmed, head to our activities page to see what’s on during your stay and book your spots early, since popular sessions fill up quickly.

And if you just want to sit on your terrace, watch the trees, and let the week slow down? That’s what you’re here for too.
