The Forest Levels Things: Bushcraft Sessions for People with Disabilities
Time outdoors does something for us that’s hard to replicate anywhere else. Research consistently shows that spending time in nature reduces stress, lowers anxiety, lifts mood and supports better sleep. For many people, a walk in the woods or an afternoon by the water is something they can access freely and often.
For people with disabilities — and for those who support them — it isn’t always that simple.
At Calvert Kielder, we’ve thought carefully about that gap.
Inaccessible terrain, a lack of adapted facilities, the need for specialist support, and the sheer effort of planning around complex needs can put green spaces out of reach. That matters, because the people who could benefit most from time in nature are often those who find it hardest to get there.
At Calvert Kielder, we’ve thought carefully about that gap.
Our bushcraft sessions invite guests staying with us on respite care breaks to get outside, explore the forest and discover the wonders of the natural world alongside our expert activities team — with the right support built in from the start, so the focus can be on the experience, not the logistics.
From spotting wildlife and discovering the animals that call the forest home to heading out on exciting buggy safaris, there’s something to spark everyone’s curiosity. Guests can learn new skills, make fires, gather around and toast marshmallows and bake pizzas under the trees.
Every session is an opportunity to try something new, build confidence and make memories together.
The forest has a way of levelling things.
Away from the noise and pressure of everyday life, people find themselves relaxed, present and open to things they might not have tried before. Whether it’s the thrill of a forest adventure or the simple pleasure of a toasted marshmallow, these are the moments that stay with people long after they’ve gone home.
That’s what we’re here for.
